Gun Control:

Keeping our Country Safe

In the United States the homicide rate is thirty times Australia and the United Kingdom. With more and more violent outbreaks people turn to guns to protect themselves and their family. “There are 88.8 firearms per 100 people in the U.S. In second place is Yemen, with 54.8, then Switzerland with 45.7 and Finland with 45.3”( Zakaria). Gun control is the act to limit possession, sale, and use of guns.  With so many people owning guns there is a greater chance there will be greater gun violence. Gun regulations should be stricter to prevent criminals from owning guns.

Extending background checks is important to protect the citizens. If someone wants to buy a gun we should have a system that is precise to make sure the person isn't a criminal. "Expanding background checks would affect only people prohibited from buying guns and would have no impact on law-abiding citizens' ability to buy or sell guns to other law-abiding citizens”( Simon). Thorough background checks would decrease the number of criminals with guns and would keep citizens safer.  A thorough background check is just one way to keep guns

in responsible hands, plus it is faster to check records than make a law. Also people that are legible would still be able to buy guns; it works out for both sides.

People with any type of violent backgrounds should not be allowed to own guns. Having weapons in the hands of criminals is not right; it puts more people in danger. "We should do everything possible to prevent criminals and fugitives from purchasing weapons"(Simon). With the through background checks it will make it harder for criminals to get a gun.” Research shows that effective regulation of guns leads to reductions in firearms homicides and suicides” (Karen).  Crimes will decrease if we just enforce gun regulations and maybe add some new ones. Keeping guns out of irresponsible hands will save everyone the worry.

Guns must be handled with serious care, they aren’t a toy. “When the squeeze of a finger can end a life--or save one--people tend to line up at the extremes” (Kimberlin). When something is so controlling of life or death, it must be handled responsibility. Classes should be enforced for any person that bought a gun. When guns are a large part of our society we don’t want to be known for all the violence that occurs in our country. We as Americans want to be known as a peaceful country. Gun safety is very important, classes would teach you when and how to use the gun properly. When a person has to attend classes for something they know it is a serious matter and gun safety is a very serious matter.

Many people disagree with more regulations and restrictions against guns. "Gun-rights supporters say that self-protection is the only practical answer and that no one should deny them that option” (Kimberlin). People would not need to protect themselves if guns were in the right hands. "The other argument against any serious gun control is that it's unconstitutional, an

attempt to undo American history "(Zakaria). Gun restrictions are not taking away the right to own guns it is just limiting them to those who are responsible enough for them. It is said that guns don’t kill people, that people kill people. Although that saying is correct a lot of the time murders use guns.

There are many ways to prevent gun from being in the wrong hands. "First, we should begin by enforcing laws that are already on the books” (Obama). By just enforcing laws we have already that would help a lot but we can’t stop there. Deep background checks would continually provide protection from those who should not own guns. More laws with guns would help decrease the amount of violence. Although at the moment we might not have that many laws the future always holds more opportunities.

With so many guns being in the wrong hands gun regulations need to expand to prevent it. Although people may think gun control might not affect you, it does. It helps keep you and your loved ones safe from harm ways. Although violence will still occur, we can’t stop. By just decreasing the amount of violence we will save many valuable lives.
